If you’re a student wondering what to do after graduation, a professional thinking about switching careers, or a business owner wondering why your competitor’s Instagram page is busier than your shop, you’re in the right place.
I’ll keep it simple, use real examples, and be honest about what works and what’s hype. By the end, you’ll know what digital marketing is, which part of it suits you, and what to do this week to get started.
Digital marketing at a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What is digital marketing? | Promoting products, services or ideas to people through the internet and digital devices: search engines, social media, websites, email, apps and messaging |
| In simple words | Getting the right message to the right people, on the screens they already use, and measuring what happens |
| The 7 main types | SEO, search ads (PPC), social media marketing, content marketing, email and WhatsApp marketing, influencer marketing, affiliate marketing |
| Why it matters in Pakistan | 117 million internet users and around 80 million social media user identities by late 2025, and most of them are on mobile |
| Common jobs | Social media executive, SEO executive, performance (paid ads) marketer, content marketer, e-commerce executive, digital marketing manager |
| How to start | Learn the basics free, pick one channel, practise on a real project, show results in a simple portfolio |
| How people earn | A job, freelancing for clients, running an agency, selling your own products online, affiliate income or creating content |
| Time to job-ready | Usually a few months of consistent learning and practice, not a few days |
What is digital marketing?
▸ Definition — Digital marketing: promoting a product, service or idea to people through digital channels (search engines, social media, websites, email, messaging apps and online marketplaces) and using data to see what works.
All marketing has the same goal: get the right message to the right people at the right time, so they choose you. Digital marketing does that through screens, mostly the phone in your pocket.
Think about how your parents found a good tailor. They asked a neighbour, walked through the market and saw the shop sign. Today, most people in a city like Lahore or Karachi will first search “best tailor near me”, check the Google reviews, look at the Instagram page and message on WhatsApp before ever visiting. Every one of those steps is a digital marketing touchpoint. If the tailor isn’t there, a competitor is.
What is digital marketing in simple words?
▸ Example — In one sentence: digital marketing is telling people about your business on the internet, in the places they already spend time, and checking which efforts bring customers.
That last part is what makes it different. On a billboard you rarely know who saw it. Online, you can see how many people viewed your post, clicked your ad, visited your website and bought. Measurement is digital marketing’s superpower.
Digital vs. traditional marketing
| Traditional marketing | Digital marketing | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | TV, radio, newspapers, billboards, leaflets | Google, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, email, WhatsApp, websites |
| Targeting | Broad: everyone watching or passing by | Precise: by location, age, interests, behaviour |
| Starting budget | Usually high | Can start very small |
| Measurement | Estimated (ratings, surveys) | Detailed (clicks, visits, sales, cost per customer) |
| Speed of change | Slow: weeks to change an ad | Fast: change an ad in minutes |
| Conversation | One-way | Two-way: comments, messages, reviews |
▸ Margin note — Digital hasn’t replaced traditional marketing. Big brands still use TV and billboards to become famous, then use digital to turn that fame into clicks and sales. The best marketers understand both.
How digital marketing works
Digital marketing follows people through a simple journey. Marketers often call it a funnel, because many people start at the top and fewer reach the bottom.
- Discover: someone sees you for the first time, perhaps through a reel, a search result or a friend’s share.
- Consider: they look closer: they visit your profile or website, read reviews, compare prices.
- Buy: they place an order, send a WhatsApp message, book a call or visit the shop.
- Return and recommend: a good experience brings them back and makes them tell others.
▸ Example — A home baker in Lahore. She posts short videos of her cakes on Instagram and TikTok (discover). People check her highlights and reviews (consider). They order on WhatsApp and pay cash on delivery (buy). She sends a thank-you message with a discount for their next birthday (return). That’s a complete digital marketing system, run from one phone. Illustrative.
Each of the seven types below helps with one or more steps of this journey.
What are the 7 types of digital marketing?
There are many ways to group digital marketing, but these seven types cover almost everything you’ll see in job ads and client briefs.
| # | Type | What it does | Best for | Main tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SEO (search engine optimisation) | Helps your website appear in Google’s free results | Long-term, steady traffic | Google Search Console, keyword tools |
| 2 | Search ads (PPC / SEM) | Paid ads shown when people search | Fast, high-intent leads and sales | Google Ads |
| 3 | Social media marketing | Organic posts and paid ads on social platforms | Awareness, community, sales | Meta Business Suite, TikTok Ads, YouTube |
| 4 | Content marketing | Useful articles, videos and guides that attract people | Trust and long-term demand | Blogs, YouTube, LinkedIn |
| 5 | Email and WhatsApp marketing | Direct messages to people who opted in | Repeat sales and loyalty | Mailchimp-style email tools, WhatsApp Business |
| 6 | Influencer marketing | Creators recommend your product to their followers | Reach and credibility, fast | Instagram, TikTok, YouTube |
| 7 | Affiliate marketing | Partners earn a commission for sales they send | Sales with pay-for-results | Affiliate programmes and tracking links |
1. SEO (search engine optimisation)
SEO means improving your website so it appears higher in Google’s free (organic) results. Think of Google as a huge library and SEO as making sure your book is easy to find, clearly labelled and recommended by other trusted books.
- Example: a Karachi clinic writes clear pages for each service and gets listed on Google Maps, so it appears when people search “dentist in Clifton”.
- Skills: keyword research, writing, basic website knowledge, patience.
2. Search ads (PPC or SEM)
Pay-per-click (PPC) ads appear at the top of Google when people search. You pay only when someone clicks. Because people are actively searching, these clicks are often close to a purchase.
- Example: an online shoe store bids on “buy running shoes online” so its ad shows to people ready to buy.
- Skills: numbers, testing, writing short ads, understanding margins and budgets.
▸ Definition — PPC (pay-per-click): an ad model where you pay each time someone clicks your ad. SEM (search engine marketing) usually means paid search ads, and sometimes SEO plus paid search together.
3. Social media marketing
Using Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn to build an audience, either for free (organic posts) or by paying for ads. In Pakistan, this is where most small businesses start.
- Example: a clothing brand launches its Eid collection with reels, a giveaway and targeted Instagram ads to women in three cities.
- Skills: content ideas, short video, community management, ads management, reading insights.
4. Content marketing
Creating genuinely useful content (articles, videos, guides, podcasts) so people find you, learn from you and start to trust you. This article is content marketing.
- Example: a solar company publishes “How many panels does a 5 kW system need?” videos and gets enquiries from people researching solar.
- Skills: writing, research, video, understanding what your audience asks.
5. Email and WhatsApp marketing
Sending messages directly to people who have agreed to hear from you. Globally, email is the classic tool. In Pakistan, WhatsApp Business often does the same job: catalogues, broadcast lists and quick replies.
- Example: a bookstore sends a monthly email of new arrivals and a WhatsApp broadcast on sale days.
- Skills: writing, segmenting customers, timing, respecting consent.
▸ Margin note — Only message people who have agreed to hear from you. Spamming damages your brand and can get your number or account blocked.
6. Influencer marketing
Partnering with creators who already have the attention and trust of your audience. It ranges from celebrities to micro-influencers with a few thousand loyal followers.
- Example: a skincare brand sends products to ten micro-influencers who share honest reviews.
- Skills: finding the right creators, negotiating, briefing, checking real engagement, measuring sales.
7. Affiliate marketing
Partners promote your products using special links and earn a commission on each sale. For the business, you pay only for results. For individuals, it’s one way to earn by recommending products.
- Example: a tech reviewer links to products and earns a percentage of each sale made through their link.
- Skills: content creation, trust, tracking, choosing products you genuinely recommend.
▸ Example — Two more you’ll hear about in Pakistan. Marketplace marketing: selling on platforms like Daraz, with sponsored listings and sale campaigns. Analytics: measuring results across all channels. It’s not a channel itself, but it’s the skill that makes all seven work.
What is digital marketing in Pakistan?
Digital marketing in Pakistan is the same discipline as anywhere else, but the way people use the internet here shapes how it’s done. If you understand these local habits, you’ll make better decisions than someone copying a foreign YouTube tutorial.
Pakistan’s online audience, by the numbers
| Measure (late 2025) | Figure | Share of population |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 256 million | — |
| Mobile connections | 194 million | 75.9% |
| Internet users | 117 million | 45.6% |
| Social media user identities | 79.9 million | 31.2% |
| YouTube ad reach | 54.3 million | 21.2% |
| Facebook ad reach | 52.9 million | 20.6% |
| TikTok ad reach (adults 18+) | 79.9 million | 54.6% of adults |
Source: DataReportal, Digital 2026: Pakistan. Ad reach figures are the audiences platforms say their ads can reach, not monthly active users.
Two things stand out. First, the online audience is already huge: more people than the entire population of most countries. Second, more than half of Pakistanis are still not online, so the market keeps growing every year, and so does the need for people who know how to market online.
What makes digital marketing in Pakistan different
- It’s mobile-first. Most people go online on a phone. Your ads, pages and videos must work on a small screen and a slower connection.
- WhatsApp is the shop counter. Many customers prefer to ask questions and order on WhatsApp rather than through a website checkout.
- Cash on delivery is common. Many buyers still prefer paying cash at the door, which means marketers must also think about fake orders and returns.
- Language is mixed. The best-performing content often mixes Urdu, English and Roman Urdu, and regional languages matter outside big cities.
- Video dominates. YouTube, TikTok and Instagram Reels are central to how people discover brands.
- Marketplaces matter. Platforms like Daraz are a big part of online shopping, with their own ads and sale events.
- Trust is earned slowly. Reviews, real photos, clear return policies and a visible phone number make a big difference.
▸ Margin note — Platforms are occasionally restricted or slowed in Pakistan. Don’t build a business on a single channel; build an audience you can reach in more than one way, such as social media plus a WhatsApp list plus a website.
▸ Example — A furniture maker in Chiniot. Ten years ago he relied only on buyers who visited the city. Today he posts videos of his workshop on YouTube and Facebook, answers questions on WhatsApp, and delivers to customers in Karachi and Islamabad. The products didn’t change. His reach did. Illustrative.
Digital marketing jobs
Digital marketing is one of the few fields where you can start with a laptop, free courses and a willingness to practise, and grow into a well-paid career. Here are the roles you’ll see most often in job ads.
| Job title | What you’d actually do | Key skills | Good first step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social media executive | Plan posts, write captions, reply to comments, report on results | Writing, content ideas, Canva/CapCut, insights | Run a page for a real business for 3 months |
| SEO executive | Research keywords, improve pages, build links, track rankings | Research, writing, Google Search Console | Optimise a small website and record the results |
| Performance marketer (paid ads) | Run and optimise Google, Meta and TikTok ads | Numbers, testing, budgets, analytics | Run a small ad budget for a family or friend’s business |
| Content writer / strategist | Write blogs, scripts, emails and landing pages | Clear writing, research, SEO basics | Publish 5 strong samples on a free blog or LinkedIn |
| E-commerce / marketplace executive | Manage listings, promotions and ads on a store or Daraz | Product listings, pricing, campaigns | Help a small seller improve their listings |
| Email / CRM executive | Build lists, write campaigns, automate messages | Writing, segmentation, tools | Set up a newsletter for a small business |
| Digital marketing manager | Plan strategy, manage budgets, lead a team or agencies | All of the above, plus planning and people skills | Usually 3–5+ years of hands-on experience |
Where to find digital marketing jobs in Pakistan
- LinkedIn: set your location, follow companies and agencies you like, and turn on job alerts for “digital marketing”, “social media” and “SEO”.
- Local job portals: sites such as Rozee.pk list many marketing roles.
- Agencies: digital agencies hire juniors more often than brands do, and you learn fast because you work on many clients.
- Company career pages: brands in FMCG, telecom, banking, e-commerce and fashion all hire digital roles.
- Remote and freelance work: platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr, and remote roles on LinkedIn, let you work for clients abroad.
What employers actually look for
If I were hiring a junior today, I’d care less about how many certificates you have and more about these four things:
- Proof you’ve done it: a page you grew, a campaign you ran, an article that ranks, even if it was small.
- Numbers you understand: can you explain what happened and why, not just show screenshots?
- Clear writing: your CV, your messages and your captions all show how you think.
- Curiosity: do you test, learn and ask good questions?
▸ Margin note — What about salaries? They vary a lot by city, company and skill, and they change quickly. The most reliable way to check is to compare the ranges in current job ads on LinkedIn and local job portals for the exact role and city you’re targeting.

How can I start digital marketing?
The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to learn everything at once: SEO on Monday, TikTok on Tuesday, Google Ads on Wednesday. Three months later they know a little about everything and can’t do any of it well.
Here’s a better way: learn the basics of all, then go deep on one, and prove it with a real project. Think of it like learning to cook. You need to know what an oven and a stove do, but you become a cook by making one dish properly, again and again.
Your first 90 days
| Phase | Weeks | What to do | What you’ll have at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Understand | 1–3 | Take one free beginner course and read about all seven types | A clear picture of how the pieces fit |
| 2. Choose | 4 | Pick one channel to go deep on (for example social media, SEO or paid ads) | One focus, so your learning adds up |
| 3. Practise | 5–10 | Run a real project: your own page, a family business, a friend’s shop or a local non-profit | Real results, mistakes and lessons |
| 4. Prove | 11–13 | Write a one-page case study: goal, what you did, numbers, what you learned. Then apply or pitch | A portfolio piece that gets interviews and clients |
Free places to learn
- DigiSkills.pk: a free government-backed online programme (run by Ignite with the Virtual University of Pakistan) whose courses include digital marketing. Completers receive an e-certificate from the Virtual University. Seats open in batches, so watch for enrolment announcements.
- Google Skillshop: free training and certifications for Google Ads, Analytics and other Google tools.
- Meta Blueprint: free courses on Facebook and Instagram marketing and advertising.
- HubSpot Academy: free courses on content, email and inbound marketing.
- YouTube and blogs: useful, but choose teachers who show real results and explain why, not just “five secret hacks”.
▸ Margin note — Course lists and certifications change often. Check each website for what’s currently offered before you plan around it.
Your starter kit
- A laptop or a decent phone and a reliable internet connection
- A Gmail account for Google tools, and a Meta Business account
- Canva (free) for images and CapCut (free) for short videos
- One real project to practise on
- A simple spreadsheet to track what you did and what happened each week
- A LinkedIn profile that shows what you’re learning and building
▸ Example — A realistic first project. Your uncle runs a small electronics repair shop. You claim his Google Business Profile, add photos and opening hours, ask happy customers for reviews, and post a weekly before-and-after repair video. After eight weeks you compare calls and walk-ins with the previous two months. That’s a real case study, with real numbers, that you can talk about in any interview. Illustrative.
How to make money from digital marketing
There’s no single path. Here are the six most common, with an honest view of each.
| Route | How you earn | What you need first | Realistic start |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. A job | Monthly salary at a brand or agency | Basic skills plus one project you can explain | Junior roles, internships, trainee programmes |
| 2. Freelancing | Paid per project or monthly by clients | A clear skill, samples and good communication | Small local clients first, then platforms like Upwork and Fiverr |
| 3. Your own agency | Retainers from several clients, often with a small team | Proven results and the ability to sell and manage | Usually after a few years of experience |
| 4. Your own online business | Selling products through social media, a website or Daraz | A product, some capital and marketing skills | A small range, tested with small ad budgets |
| 5. Affiliate marketing | Commission on sales from your links | An audience that trusts your recommendations | Build content first; income comes later |
| 6. Content creation and teaching | Ads, sponsorships, courses or training | Expertise and a consistent publishing habit | Share what you’re learning, consistently, for months |
▸ Margin note — Be careful of “earn lakhs in a week” promises. Real income from digital marketing comes from real skills and real results for real clients. If a course’s main product is selling you the dream, walk away.
Getting paid from abroad in Pakistan
If you freelance for international clients, plan how you’ll receive money before you start:
- PayPal is not officially available in Pakistan, so don’t build your freelancing around it.
- Payoneer is widely used by Pakistani freelancers, works with platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, and lets you withdraw to local banks.
- Direct bank transfers to your Pakistani bank account are another option, especially for long-term clients.
Check the current fees and rules with your bank and payment provider, and keep records of your income for tax purposes.
Digital marketing images: what they are and how to make good ones
In digital marketing, images do a lot of the work. They stop the scroll, explain the offer and make people trust you. “Digital marketing images” usually means one of these:
- Social media posts and ad creatives: the images and short videos in feeds and stories.
- Thumbnails: the cover image for YouTube videos and reels, often the deciding factor in whether people click.
- Product photos: clean, well-lit photos for shops, marketplaces and catalogues.
- Banners: website headers and marketplace campaign banners.
- Infographics: visuals that explain an idea, like the ones in this article.
What makes a digital marketing image work
- One message. If it needs a paragraph to explain, it’s too busy.
- Readable on a phone. Check it at thumbnail size before you post.
- A clear focal point. One product, one face or one headline that the eye goes to first.
- Your brand, every time. The same colours, fonts and logo position help people recognise you.
- Real over generic. Real photos of your product, team or customers beat stock photos almost every time.
Common image sizes
| Use | Size (pixels) | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Feed post (square) | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Feed post (portrait) | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Stories, reels and TikTok | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Link preview / blog share image | 1200 × 630 | about 1.9:1 |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 |
Platforms update their recommendations from time to time, so check each platform’s help pages for the latest sizes.
7 mistakes beginners make (and what to do instead)
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Learning everything at once | You end up shallow in everything | Learn the basics, then master one channel |
| Collecting certificates, not results | Employers and clients hire proof | Do one real project and document it |
| Chasing followers and likes | They don’t pay salaries | Track enquiries, sales and cost per customer |
| Copying foreign tactics blindly | Pakistani buyers behave differently | Adapt for mobile, WhatsApp, Urdu and COD |
| Boosting posts without a goal | Money spent, nothing learned | Set one objective and one number to watch |
| Ignoring the business behind the marketing | You can’t tell if a campaign made money | Learn margins and basic numbers (see “Why revenue can grow while profit shrinks”) |
| Giving up after one month | Most skills take months to show results | Commit to 90 days of steady practice |
A note from me
I started my career in 2016 in client servicing at an advertising agency, unsure what “digital” would even mean for my future. Since then I’ve worked brand-side on consumer brands, from food to home appliances, across TV, outdoor, retail and digital. I’ve run an agency for clients in Dubai, helped grow a fashion brand from zero on Instagram, and worked with clients in the US, UK and Turkey.
None of that came from a secret trick. It came from learning one thing properly, doing real work, looking honestly at the numbers, and then learning the next thing.
If you’re reading this from a small city with a slow connection and a borrowed laptop, that’s fine. Digital marketing is one of the few careers where what you can show matters more than where you started. Start small, stay consistent, and keep a record of what you learn. You can do this.
Your next steps this week
- 1Choose one free course from the list above and finish the first module.
- 2Pick one real project: your own page, a family business or a local shop.
- 3Set one goal and one number to track for the next 8 weeks.
- 4Subscribe to the Monday lesson so you get one practical lesson every week.
